GAME OF THRONES WORLD PREMIERE

I couldn't even type out the entirety of this post without squealing every couple of minutes, seriously it was a struggle guys, haha. I wasn't originally planning on doing a whole separate blog post on this but I've gotten a fair few requests to talk about my experience attending the world premiere of Game of Thrones Season 5 and I think what most of you are most curious about, my reunion with a certain Miss Sophie Turner! So let's begin looking back on what could only be described as the best night of my humble life so far...

I'm sure most of you know I'm a huge Game of Thrones fan. It's safe to say that getting lost in the tv show and books are my favourite pastimes and sometimes I feel as if the Known World and Westeros are more real to me than this world I'm currently living in. Yep, I'm that crazy. Having met most of the cast previously and being able to vouch for the fact that they are truly the nicest bunch of actors in the biz further reinforces my love for this show. Now it's always been a dream of mine to go to a Game of Thrones world premiere. Every single year it's a highlight and a ritual for me to watch their extravagant world premiere in the US, always a visual spectacle with their lavishly decorated venues and of course the full cast in attendance. When I heard that this year, for the first time ever, the world premiere would be held in London, I was speechless. I thought it must be fate, I'd never been more excited for anything in my life. Then came the sudden downfall when Sky Atlantic announced that this event would not be open to public. I was in such a state of shock and dismay (you might have seen my rants on twitter), I just couldn't believe they were taking this moment away from the people that have made the biggest impact on this show: the fans. Alas, a small sliver of hope appeared when Sky then revealed a competition for 50 of the winners to be able to attend the premiere. Unexpectedly, my friend and I won a place. I'm not ashamed to say that I bawled my eyes out when I found out. This must be fate indeed. Anyways, enough of the gushy background story, I'm sure you all just want to know what went down at the premiere right?

The world premiere of the fifth season of Game of Thrones was held at the Tower of London, and I couldn't think of a more fitting venue. The preparations had started days in advance, the red carpet assembled in the moat area of the historic castle and the finishing touch came in the form of the Iron Throne descending down into the venue, just hours before it was due to start. Fifty fans and their plus ones were escorted down into an area along the red carpet, alongside residents of the Tower. I situated myself near the beginning of the red carpet, where the cast would enter and make their way up to the 'tent' for photos and interviews. Our host for the evening, Sue Perkins of The Great British Bake Off, was busy rehearsing her lines in front of us and behind us, cameras on cranes were roving about, ready to capture everything for the live stream. When the clock hit half past six, it was time for the guests to start arriving. One of the very first people to show up was none other than Kit Harington, who of course plays fan favourite Jon Snow. He seemed to be in a really good mood as he took his time talking to the fans. A Ygritte cosplayer next to me had his attention for a while as they lamented the loss of her character. When he came up to me, I got him to sign something for my best friend back in Australia (who is the biggest Jon Snow fan I've ever known, shout out to you Lily!) and then handed him my copy of last year's Vanity Fair magazine with the GoT cast spread. He jokingly asked me whether he should sign on Ygritte's face and when I said yes, he did it so enthusiastically, he ripped a hole in my magazine. Yep, thanks Kit. He then proceeded to apologise and give me another autograph, what a lovely man. I tried to 'out-sad' him in my selfie with him too but failed miserably, that Jon-Snow-puppy-dog expression is harder than I thought! Next came Hannah Murray, stunning in a bell-sleeved sheer lace dress and towering heels, a far cry from her character in the show, Gilly. Hannah's always a sweetheart and she was more than happy to say hello to everyone and pose for photos. Alfie Allen and Iwan Rheon (Theon Greyjoy and Ramsay Bolton respectively) arrived within minutes of each other and by now the red carpet atmosphere was seriously abuzz, photographers running up and down to capture every moment and interviews with the Thronecast presenters at the end of the carpet being broadcasted on the big screen.

Not long after, I spotted a the silhouette of a tall young lady with her hair slicked back into a high ponytail at the start of the red carpet. My favourite actress, Sophie Turner was here! "This is so weird!" I heard her exclaim as she posed for a photo with a Sansa Stark cosplayer. It was right after this moment that she saw me (she didn't even see the huge poster of her I was holding, she literally spotted my face in the crowd, bless her), and then she ran up to me and pulled me into the biggest hug. We stayed wrapped up like that, swaying from side to side for a while, I cannot explain to you how much this remarkable girl means to me and I don't think others will ever truly understand. I have no idea what Sophie sees in me but all I know is that I'm forever grateful to that day we first met, a little over a year ago now, the first conversation we had and that she decided to follow me back. When we finally broke apart, she continued to hold my hands and chat. Of course some things will always just be between the two of us but she mentioned how much wear she'd gotten out of my birthday present and she was pleased to recognise the coat I was wearing, "That's the Karen Millen coat! I know because I wore it!" After a while Sophie started fretting that I was getting cold (when she was the one in the backless gown) and asked whether I was going inside. I was also starting to worry that I'd stolen enough of her time when there were heaps of other fans wanting to see her and of course press interviews for her to do. When I told her that unfortunately I wouldn't be watching the screening inside, she reassured me that we'd most likely see each other again soon anyway. With that and a spectacular flurry of her dress, she went down the red carpet. My friend next to me remarked what a great reunion it was and I have to agree, every time I see her, it's always a special moment.

Gwendoline Christie aka Brienne of Tarth appeared next, all smiles as she greeted the fans. She graciously took all the selfies for everyone as she's quite tall. I loved her outfit and that she wore flats, definitely a girl after my own heart. Commotion at the other end of the carpet signalled Aidan Gillen's (Littlefinger) arrival and although he seemed to be in a bit of a hurry, barely signing and not stopping for photos, I've had the pleasure of meeting him before and I had the impression that he's really a lot more talkative than he appears to be in most interviews. While I managed to say hello to most of the cast, there was one moment when Sophie being interviewed was pulled up on the big screen and I got momentarily distracted, consequently missing a whole group of people who walked past including Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon), and Tom Wlaschiha (Jaqen H'ghar). Typical me. Soon after, Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) walked past and said hello to me as I'd bumped into her at the tube station the day before and she remembered! I was happy to see Isaac Hempstead-Wright there, even though it was announced that his character, Bran, wouldn't be appearing at all in this upcoming season. It was so nice to meet Liam Cunningham, John Bradley-West, and Conleth Hill again. Conleth, in particular, was in such a jolly mood, he almost knocked me out when we were posing for a selfie. I enjoyed his interview together with Sophie, I think it's so wonderful how close all the cast members are, despite having separate shooting schedules and locations as you can imagine. Here are the rest of the selfies I took that night.

I still wish they would have opened the premiere to the public so all the fans could have experienced it, because in my opinion, some of the people who had won the competition and were there, hadn't even watched a single episode of the show and had just entered for fun. Nevertheless, when most of the cast had finished their press interviews and the red carpet was progressively getting quieter, I felt very lucky indeed to be amongst the select few there and I'm pretty sure everyone all had a fantastic time and took home many treasured memories. I think the highlight for me (apart from seeing Sophie again of course) was being able to see cast, crew, and fans all come together, share and celebrate their love for the show. I think that atmosphere is truly unforgettable. Game of Thrones is such a huge love in my life that typing up this post felt incredibly personal and therefore rather unusual for my blog. I hope that you enjoyed reading it nonetheless and that it gave you an insight into the event whether you're a fan of the show or not. A recording of the premiere was broadcasted on Sky Atlantic and I was super excited to see that they filmed the exact moment when Sophie spotted me! Aww the memories, take me back!
