COSPLAY | THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
I didn't have any previous plans to attend MCM Comic Con this year but after a friend asked me whether I would come along I thought, why ever the hell not? However, after my first attempt at cosplay earlier in the year where I transformed myself into Sansa Stark/Alayne Stone for London Film & Comic Con, I felt like it wouldn't be nearly as fun to go to a pop culture convention without dressing up. It wasn't until I went to the pictures to see The Man from U.N.C.L.E. for the second time with my friend that I had a lightbulb moment — a partner cosplay as spies Illya Kuriyakin and Gaby Teller.
With two weeks to go till the event, my friend and I scoured the interwebs for actual pieces used by the movie stylist or replicas. Gabby's wardrobe was almost entirely custom made except for her House of Holland Annice sunglasses which predictably sold out very soon after the film was released. Despite this initial predicament, I came across this orange dress by Anne Klein that was convenitently on sale and I thought the white floral pattern on it was quite reminiscent to the original, though I did have to knock a couple of inches off the length. Building up her all white accessories look started with a pair of platforms since I knew heels would be off the cards for an entire day at Comic Con. These ones from ASOS gave a pretty similar look without the pain and they were also surprisingly light and comfortable for a day of walking around. It wouldn't be a sixties look without white Jackie O style sunglasses (these particular ones are vintage from Etsy) and the final touches were H&M clip on earrings and a white bag, both of which I borrowed from my mum. Now for the beauty bits and bobs: I knew that realistically I needed to wear a wig (as much as I would have preferred not to) as I didn't have a fringe nor the skills to style my hair into a beehive (oh yeah and my hair's currently blue so there's that as well). I'd never worn a wig in my life and the one thing I was most worried about was how on earth all of my hair would fit under a much shorter do. I found this wig on a fancy dress website for quite a modest price and although it's not the best quality, I think it emulates Gaby's look perfectly. However, I do have a LOT of hair and not gonna lie, it was a little bit of a struggle to get it all under a wig cap. I ended up doing a side plait and twisting it into a low chignon so my real hair was resting at the nape of my neck. It's wasn't the most secure hiding place but the wig covered it just fine for most of the day. For make-up, I went a little heavier on the bronzer as Alicia Vikander is a whole lot more tanned than me and did a gold smokey eye using Charlotte Tilbury's Dolce Vita palette before adding some fluttery Tanya Burr false lashes because if there's one thing that stood out to me about Gaby in The Man from U.N.C.L.E, it was her incredible yet obviously false lashes. Lips were kept nude with MAC's Half-n-Half and I attempted to carve out some previously non-existent cheekbones with Charlotte Tilbury's Filmstar Bronze and Glow. My friend Emily's Illya costume consisted of a turtleneck, trousers, newboy cap and chelsea boots all from Primark and a suede bomber jacket from ASOS (womens version here).
I'm wearing: Anne Klein Daisy dress / ASOS shoes / H&M earrings (sold out online) / Rochas bag / Vintage sunglasses (similar)
Emily wears: ASOS jacket / Primark turtleneck / Primark trousers / Primark boots / Primark hat
I was super pleased with how our partner cosplay turned out and we both had such a fun day at MCM Comic Con. It was also nice to have comfortable costumes on for once, especially in a rather warm venue with such a large crowd to navigate. I'd actually love to master a beehive on my actual hair and dress like this every single day.
Were you at MCM Comic Con? Who/what did you cosplay as?
